How Can I Remotely View My Security Camera Using The Internet?

March 24, 2022

If you’ve got a new security camera installed, there’s a good chance that you can remotely view the camera footage via the internet. This is incredibly handy if you’re away from home and want to check up on your property.
If you’re wondering, ‘how can I remotely view my security camera using the internet?’, then this article is just for you. We’re going to look at two different ways that you can remotely view your security camera feed via the internet.

Using The Manufacturer's Application

Most security camera manufacturers allow you to remotely view your security camera through their own application. The application is designed with your camera model in mind and should be compatible with the software for remote viewing. There are lots of different manufacturers with their own software, so to find the right one for you, it’s a good idea to check the company website for further information.

Using the manufacturer’s software for this task is the best way to go because it offers excellent security and ease of use. What’s more, they will regularly update the software so that you can enjoy any additional functionality. To get started, follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to the manufacturer's website and download the application on your smartphone or computer.
  2. Launch the application and register your device and user account.
  3. Select your camera from within the application to set it up and remotely view the feed.

Using Port Forwarding To Remotely View Your Security Camera

Although most security camera manufacturers have software specifically designed for remote viewing, not all do. This is especially true for older models which aren’t compatible with the latest versions of the manufacturer’s software. To get around this, you can use port forwarding to set up remote viewing.
To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Determine the IP address of your security camera. You should be able to find this information in the network settings.
  2. Determine the WAN/External IP address for your router. The best way to do this is to use the DNS service to set up your security camera. This assigns your camera a specific name so you won’t need to know the IP address moving forward.
  3. Find the security camera port numbers and forward ports for your router. Ports are a way to limit data and only show what you want to see. So you can set up a specific port number for your security camera.
  4. Input the URL address for your security camera on a web browser. This should be the WAN IP address and the port number combined.

Using these steps, you should be able to view your security camera feed remotely using any web browser, provided you have the information required.
